Artists respond to the climate crisis

Smoke Condition, gouache, watercolor, colored pencil and acrylic, 11 1/2" x 11 1/2", $300

"My painting “Smoke Condition” revisited an event that took place in August 2018 when smoke from fires in British Columbia traveled to the Pacific Northwest. I was in Seattle when dense smoke similar to the brownish color in my painting filled the air. For a week we avoided going outside.  The most eerie aspect of this occurrence was the sun.  An intense red ring encircled the sun and it was strangely visible to the naked eye. The weathered tree branch arose as both victim and witness to this scene. The branch a symbol of vulnerability, isolation and the threat we face on our warming planet.

Returning to Seattle in August 2020 smoke from intense fires in California, Oregon and Washington filled the sky. Choking air far worse from 2018. The alarm for addressing climate change is blasting loudly we need to hear it and act."

Pearl Rosen Golden focuses on painting the landscape and pursuing its compelling possibilities. She explores a variety of mediums and techniques that push the landscape into realism or expressionism that is influenced by authentic observation.
