Take A Knee, Oil Paint  24"x36"

Covid Landscape, Oil Paint 36"x48"

"The two images that were selected reflect the time that we are living in. As I was working in my studio, I could not help feel a certain helplessness around the circumstances of two simultaneous and devastating occurrences which happen to be the Corona Virus and Black lives matter.

The first painting “Take A Knee” almost created itself. I do not normally put figures into my work but in this case the figures almost appeared on their own. I believe that we are in a time of great change and sometimes things must get worse before they can get better. I am glad this issue of “Black Lives Matter” has risen to the surface. Artists can be the voice of the times, we can record history through our own unique artistic perspective. I hope this painting of all people together like a tapestry can show that it is in our diversity that we are stronger, more interesting and above all that each human being is special and created equal.

The second painting “Covid Landscape” is also a bit different from my usual work because normally my paintings are life affirming and filled with pattern. In this case the work suggests a void. It is the emptiness of life. It is missing the lushness of nature and growth. It is missing like all the life snuffed out by covid and the hateful regime of this administration. My hope is that we can use this time of unrest to create a more equal and just society."
