The Sea Is Rising
"There’s a great deal of serendipity in collage. When a drawing goes wrong I cut out the mistakes, keep the good parts, and let them sit. That’s what happened with this little doric temple and also the angel. The snow-covered trees and the proscenium arch I made deliberately to use in collage. The pelican I took from Audubon. I made the first stage of this piece in 1999. In 2020, after seeing Hurricane Sandy flood my neighborhood and the first floors of my apartment building, I added the waves, being sure to give the Pelican something to stand upon.."
